The Heart of the Matter

"You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear Him and keep His commandments and obey his voice , and you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him." (Deuteronomy 13:4)

Though a relationship with God is secure by the work of the Cross, fellowship is maintained by our daily pursuit. Furthermore the degree of our pursuit is determined by the passion of the heart. The command here is to pursue God at all costs from the heart. It is a command to "walk after the LORD," to make progress towards Him daily. To "fear Him" and have reverence, something that is reflected by a life of holiness. To "keep His commandments" which essentially means to own His word in our heart and mind, whether it be a promise to claim or a command to obey. To "obey his voice" is to discern and to do as His Spirit leads us with a still small voice. We are called to "serve Him" being an extension of His love and grace to the world around us, all of which is rooted in faith as we "hold fast to Him," by taking refuge under him like a child holding their daddy's legs! A life of fellowship is a life of action rooted in a deep love for God which takes root in our heart!

Emily Giffin doesn't disappoint in Heart of the Matter. This complex story focuses on two women with seemingly different lives. A tragic accident brings these two women together in ways neither ever imagined possible. I enjoy Giffin's writing because she takes issues that many would consider taboo and making them real.
